The river that does not ease you in.

The Naranjo is the middle of our three rafting trips and the one most people mean when they say they want whitewater. Class III-IV, four hours, and a stretch of river that keeps asking something of you rather than letting you sit and admire the scenery.

It runs through steep jungle canyon most of the way. Between the rapids there is time to look up at it, and the walls are close enough that you notice how little of this valley anybody has built on.

Four hours that ask something of you, rather than four hours of scenery.

More about this tour

The guides are the operator's own and they run this water constantly. You paddle, they steer and they call it, and a raft that listens gets through cleanly. That is most of the fun of it.

Our own operational notes put the minimum age at twelve and ask for some swimming ability, which is the honest shape of this trip. If that rules out somebody in your group, the Savegre trip is the gentler river and it is a genuinely good day rather than a consolation.

Here's how the 4 hours unfold.

Every step is planned so you can focus on the experience, not the logistics.

At the put-in

Gear and the safety talk.

Helmet, buoyancy aid and paddle, then the briefing on commands and what to do if you come out of the boat. Nobody launches without it.

On the water

Through the canyon.

The main run, with the guide calling the strokes. Quieter stretches between the rapids to catch your breath and look at where you are.

Everything that's included, and everything to bring.
