The mangroves as the light goes.

The Damas estuary is a different place after dark, and in a kayak you are down among it: the roots at arm's length, the night sounds starting up, and lamps picking out what is on the banks.

The tour goes out on the evening tide, so the night it runs and the time it leaves depend on the water, and some nights have no departure at all. We confirm your date with the operator before you plan around it.

More about this tour

It is paddling on protected water and the guide sets the pace, but it is paddling, in the dark, so it suits people who are comfortable in a kayak. Groups on the water stay small. If you would rather sit back, there is a night tour of the same channels by boat.

Roosting birds, snakes on low branches and the eyes of a crocodilian above the waterline are what the lamps usually find. Fireflies and bioluminescence happen on the right night; treat them as a possibility, not a promise.

What might you see out there?

Your naturalist knows where they hide, when they move, and how to find them.

Likely

Green Heron

Butorides virescens

Hunched on a low branch over the water after dark, at exactly the height a kayak passes.

If you are lucky

Blunt-headed Tree Snakes

Imantodes spp.

Absurdly thin, with a head far wider than the neck. Harmless to people, and essentially impossible to find without a guide who knows where to point the lamp.

Likely

Wood-Rails

Aramides spp.

A long-legged wetland bird with a grey hood and a red eye, far more often heard than seen. It calls at dusk.

Wildlife sightings are nature, never a guarantee. Your guide knows where to look.

Here's how the 3 hours unfold

Every step is planned so you can focus on the experience, not the logistics.

At the water

Life jackets and a briefing.

Single or tandem kayaks, lights checked, and onto flat water as the light goes.

After dark

Paddling the banks.

Slowly along the channels behind the guide, stopping whenever the lamp finds something.
